Dear Dad,

Almost a year ago, you visited me and my sister after coming in contact with my mother at her old workplace. We talked for a bit, and you told us you were going to contact us via text.

Even though I would love for you to text more often, I’m glad you kept that promise. Your texts make my eyes light up like Christmas Day — even the ones wishing me a Happy Birthday or saying that you love me. Anything is better than nothing.

In February, you texted us wanting to know if we would like to get some ice cream with my little half-sister within the month. Of course, we agreed.

Well, February came and went, but you didn’t show up. I was wondering why when you gave me a text explaining that you had hurt your ankle badly, so you wouldn’t be able to drive anywhere. I forgave you because I can imagine how a hurt ankle would affect your driving abilities.

So, you texted asking if we would like to go for ice cream on Saturday March 4 at noon. We accepted. I couldn’t sleep very well that previous night, and I woke up early with excitement. I couldn’t wait to meet up with you and my little half-sister while eating ice cream. I couldn’t even eat much; I was just too excited!

It felt as if time was slowing to a crawl as it got to noon. During that time, I played fetch with my dog. Then, noon came… and it went. After about fifteen minutes, I was starting to worry about you. But then, you showed up. You remembered! We were going to eat ice cream!

During the ride, you were thinking about taking us to the Baskin Robbins in our town, but that place closed down a while ago. So, I told you about another Baskin Robbins in a nearby town across from a Lowe’s. So, we went there instead and caught up on what’s been going on in our lives. You showed us a picture of your dog, and she was the cutest little thing I had ever seen (beside my dog of course)!

Then, we went back to our house, and you asked if we wanted to go to Comic Con in June. My sister, who rarely leaves the house, declined. I, however, accepted the offer because I had never been and would love to go to one someday.

Our time together was too short, but, at the same time, every second was worth it! I enjoyed our outing at Baskin Robbins this weekend, and I would love to hear from you more often. However, there was one crucial thing missing from what would’ve otherwise been a perfect Saturday — my little half-sister.

You stated in our last real-life meeting that she had been having issues, and, by her absence, those issues haven’t been quite resolved yet. I wish her the best, and I’ll pray for her as often as I can. Hopefully, I’ll see her in June if we’re able to go to Comic Con…

I appreciated our time together, and I would love for us to hang out some time in the future. I hope I get to see you again!

Love,

Emily Alexandra, your loving daughter
